Our Toolset

Engineering Precision with Cutting-Edge Laser technologies

Our technologies are at the forefront of advanced laser-based manufacturing, leveraging state-of-the-art and pioneering innovations to achieve unmatched precision and performance. We push the boundaries of possibility, delivering cutting-edge solutions for the next generation of manufacturing.

Advanced Photonics and Fiber Prototyping

At SAMC, we support cutting-edge photonics research through a unique combination of laser source engineering and in-house optical fiber prototyping. Our high-power laser laboratory provides a controlled environment for developing and testing advanced laser technologies, including beam shaping and the integration of custom optical platforms.

At the heart of our photonics capabilities is Switzerland’s only small-batch fused silica fiber drawing facility, operated jointly by SIPBB-SAMC, BFH, and the University of Bern. This one-of-a-kind setup enables the fabrication of innovative fiber types such as quantum dot-doped fibers, mode-selective and multicore fibers, and hollow-core fibers for high-performance applications. Through this interdisciplinary collaboration, we bridge fundamental research and practical implementation, driving innovation in next-generation photonic systems.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is an advanced additive manufacturing technique where a laser selectively melts and fuses layers of fine metal powder to create complex, high-precision components directly from a digital model. This layer-by-layer process enables the production of intricate geometries and lightweight structures that are often unachievable with traditional manufacturing methods.

At SAMC, we are at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of LPBF technology. Our team of experts leverages state-of-the-art equipment and advanced monitoring systems, to enhance the precision and efficiency of the LPBF process. Through ongoing research and development, we aim to improve production times and expand the range of materials that can be used in LPBF.

Laser Welding

At SAMC, we leverage our team’s extensive background in laser science and cutting-edge tools to push the boundaries of welding technology. By utilizing diverse sources, including lasers with varying wavelengths and qualities, as well as plasma welding, we develop innovative solutions for metal joining. Our expertise enables us to successfully weld not only metals to each other but also dissimilar materials, such as ceramics and metals, ensuring versatile and high-performance results for complex manufacturing challenges.

Advanced Hybrid processes

At SAMC, we utilize an advanced hybrid process combining pulsed laser micromachining knowledge of BFH and continuous laser 3D printing at SIPBB to achieve unmatched dimensional accuracy and superior surface quality.
